Disney's... yes, Disney's 'Zombies and Cheerleaders'

Just catching up on this story reported by StitchKingdom.com a few weeks ago about an upcoming Disney Channel sitcom called... Zombies and Cheerleaders.

StitchKingdom wrote:

"According to Disney Channel, the music-driven pilot will begin production in December (with as an of yet unannounced cast), to be considered for a series in 2012.

The story follows Zed Necrodopolis, a typical high school student with one small caveat; he happens to be a zombie. Despite a high-tech wristwatch designed to curb any appetite he may have for his classmates, he and his zombie friends remain unpopular with the school’s most influential group, the pom-pom wielding cheerleaders. Never one to back down from a challenge, Zed sets out to improve zombie student body relations and win the attention of Addison, the cheerleading squad’s newest member."

The Walking Dead Live To See A Third Season

Breaking cable ratings records pays off for The Walking Dead with a renewal by AMC for a third season.

The official press release:

New York – October 25, 2011 - AMC announced today the renewal of “The Walking Dead” for a third season. Season two continues to deliver the strongest telecasts for any drama in basic cable history against Adults 18-49 shattering a basic cable record set nearly 10 years ago for a single drama telecast (“The Dead Zone”). “The Walking Dead” is based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics. Glen Mazzara serves as series’ showrunner. Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert and Frank Darabont are executive producers. Greg Nicotero is a co-executive producer.

"Today we are pleased to announce that the ‘dead’ shall live as we proudly renew ‘The Walking Dead’ for a third season on AMC and, globally, with our terrific partners at Fox International Channels," said Charlie Collier, AMC’s President. “We are thankful for everyone’s contribution in front of and behind the camera as we continue to make ‘The Walking Dead’ a unique television experience. And, we are so proud as it continues to set viewership records around the world.”

FOX International Channels rolled-out its global launch for “The Walking Dead” this weekend, with premieres on FIC’s cable networks in Europe, Asia, Latin American, Africa and the Middle East. The series’ international premieres delivered equally impressive results in all major international TV markets, and broke pay-TV ratings’ records across the world. Over 10 million viewers in 122 countries tuned in live to watch the second season premiere of this highly anticipated returning drama. And, FIC will once again be the international broadcasting partner for the series with Entertainment One continuing to distribute in non-FIC markets.

“Partnering with AMC on ‘The Walking Dead’ took some guts", said Sharon Tal Yguado, SVP of Scripted Programming at FIC. “But at the same time was the easiest programming decision we ever made. It's rare to come across a groundbreaking TV project that is also attached to some of the best talent in town. ‘The Walking Dead’ was treated as a global event since day one and not only changed the traditional TV model but also changed our viewers' TV experience. It is now officially a global addiction with millions of fans around the globe wanting more. We are delighted to give it to them.”

“The Walking Dead” secured a 2010 Golden Globe nomination for Best Television Series - Drama and won the 2011 Emmy Award for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup. The series tells the story of the months and years that follow after a zombie apocalypse. It follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, who travel in search of a safe and secure home.

“The Walking Dead” received rave reviews from countless critics, both domestic and international, who heralded the series as “above all else, “The Walking Dead” hasn't lost the most important ingredient in its strangely successful recipe: it’s thrilling” (The Hollywood Reporter), “...with Dead’s riveting cast of characters, the personal dynamics are almost as potent as the gory thrills” (Us Weekly), “The Walking Dead is a feast.  Dig in.” (The Guardian, UK), “It doesn’t even take three minutes to realize that this series is setting standards” (Der Tagesspiegel, Germany).

Be Prepared... For A Zombie Jamboree Attack

Boy Scouts know that they need to always 'be prepared' for anything and that includes inevitable attacks by ravenous hordes of the undead. And that is why Troop 7 out Coral Gables, FL is using a Zombie Attack Drill as the basis for earning their Radio Merit Badges.

"The troop has invited local First Defenders to participate. “If there are Zombies around, we definitely think that the police and fire departments should be involved,” said Dan Deveson, an assistant scoutmaster with the troop. “We wanted to find a way that the boys could learn how the pros use their radios, and few things are so important to a 12-year-old as thwarting Zombie attacks.”

The troop will be broadcasting Zombie Action Reports around the world using amateur radio equipment provided by licensed radio operator volunteers. “In case of hurricanes, or Zombies, amateur radio operators often work with public safety professionals to provide community support. That’s exactly the sort of activity that modern scouting is all about,” said Deveson."

This is just an absolutely brilliant way to educate the scouts and have fun while doing it!

And when the zombie apocalypse really does hit, we're betting that Troop 7 is going to do just fine for themsleves.

New In Print: The Walking Dead - Rise of the Governor

Branching out from comic books and television, Robert Kirkman now takes his epic zombie franchise into the realm of literature with the release of The Walking Dead - Rise of the Governor through St. Martin's Press.  Kirkman co-wrote the book with seasoned author Jay Bonansinga.

"In the Walking Dead universe, there is no greater villain than The Governor. The despot who runs the walled-off town of Woodbury, he has his own sick sense of justice: whether it’s forcing prisoners to battle zombies in an arena for the townspeople’s amusement, or chopping off the appendages of those who cross him. The Governor was voted “Villain of the Year” byWizard magazine the year he debuted, and his story arc was the most controversial in the history of the Walking Dead comic book series. Now, for the first time, fans of The Walking Dead will discover how The Governor became the man he is, and what drove him to such extremes."

The Walking Dead - Rise of the Governor is available now in hardcoverKindle and Audio CD editions.

New On Blu: Dead Alive (aka Braindead)

Just released this week, straight out of New Zealand, is Peter Jackson's cult classic zombie gorefest Dead Alivenow available on Blu-ray.

Braindead, as the film is known everywhere except North America, was released in 1992 and immediately earned a reputation as one of the goriest films ever made.  Featuring a unique blend of extreme horror and over the top humor, Dead Alive is indeed one of the most graphic fright films you will ever run across. In addition to directing, Peter Jackson also handled writing duties with longtime partner Fran Walsh and frequent collaborator Stephen Sinclair.

"Throw out all your preconceptions about the limits of horror! A new standard has been set with Dead Alive - The Mother of All Horror Films. On a quiet street, in a small town, pure evil has come to stay. An innocent young man forced to care for his domineering mother finds the task a whole lot more demanding after she's bitten by the cursed Sumatran rat monkey. Passing the point of death, Vera sucks friends and family into her gruesome existence among the living dead, and Lionel is sent spiraling into a ghoulish nightmare. Now a crazed zombie, she soon infects enough people to make it difficult for Lion, still the faithful son, to keep the neighbors from suspecting that something is terribly wrong. Dripping with state-of-the art special effects that feature mutilations, rock 'n' roll dismemberments and household appliances, it all combines into the most bizarre ending ever filmed."

A theatrical trailer is the only extra.

Dead Alive is available on Blu-ray for just $10.49.
